The Daily beweert een prototype versie van Microsoft Office op de iPad te hebben getest. Enkele maanden geleden berichten ze dat Microsoft bezig was met het ontwikkelen van Office voor de iPad.

Volgens hun bronnen zal het niet al te lang meer duren vooraleer we Office in de App Store zien verschijnen. Het team zou namelijk klaar zijn met het project en het is enkel nog een kwestie dat Apple zijn goedkeuring geeft voor lancering.

Word, Excel en PowerPoint bestanden zal men kunnen creëren en bewerken, zowel lokaal als online. Verder zegt The Daily dit erover:
“A brief hands-on with a working prototype of the software revealed a number of new things. The app’s user interface is similar to the current OneNote app, but it has hints of Metro, the new design language that can be seen in Windows Phone and in the as-yet-released Windows 8 desktop operating system. “

Een exacte datum wanneer Office in de App Store zal verschijnen is nog niet bekend.

UPDATE: Microsoft ontkent alle geruchten van een Office-app. De woordvoerdster van Microsoft liet dit weten: “The Daily story is based on inaccurate rumors and speculation. We have no further comment.” Ze zegt ook dat op de afbeelding het Office-product op de iPad niet van Microsoft is.

Ars Technica haalt sterke punten naar voor om toch sceptisch te zijn over het gerucht van The Daily:
“Ars was unable to obtain independent confirmation of the app’s existence from our own sources, and as such, we’re left feeling skeptical of The Daily’s claims. For one, it’s likely that the Mac BU would be involved in the development of an iPad app, and the photo appears to show no Mac BU branding. Additionally, three-apps-in-one is atypical for the App Store and may not pass Apple’s review. And finally, the claim that Microsoft could take an app from design-to-finished product within weeks seems especially aggressive, and it’s highly unlikely that the app would be coded before the design is finalized.”

UPDATE 2: Microsoft heeft laten weten via Twitter dat alles duidelijk zal worden in de komende weken.
